Poetry Speaks Who I Am: Poems of Discovery, Inspiration, Idependence, and Everything Else by Elise Paschen and Dominique Raccah (editors) 2010. Over 100 poems from classic and contemporary poets are contained in the latest addition to the Poetry Speaks series, with graphically enhanced blank pages left at the end, encouraging the contributions of the reader. The addition of a CD is a nice bonus with 47 poems read aloud, mostly from the source, (original author). Very good choice for the middle school student, but still appropriate for high school
The Spoken Word Revolution: Slam, Hip Hop & the Poetry of a New Generation by Mark Eleveld (editor) 2005. This collection represents more than 40 influential poets in text and on CD. Mark Eleveld, a high school teacher and Marc Smith, the creator of the poetry slam join forces to trace the evolution of spoken word poetry from its oral tradition. Electrifying live performance of Saul Williams, Patricia Smith, Viggo Mortensen and more.
